Key points:

  • Phase matching relies on the macroscopic ensemble to perpetuate the phase, and on the microscopic quantum system to couple the interactions
  • Interactions occuring in the quantum state evolution must correlate with the net polarization wavevector forming (energy and momentum conservation)
  • Phase matching is spatially and temporally coherent (scales as N^2 rather than N)
  • Phase mismatch can occur; attenuation due to nonlinearity of index of refraction and absorption
